Description
The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is an extraordinary species of ray-finned fish, able to live in both fresh and salt water. Atlantic salmon farming is one of the great success stories of modern aquaculture. The fish are spawned and raised in hatcheries on land before being transferred to net pens in coastal and offshore waters for grow-out.

Origin
Woolworths' Salmon is farmed in Norway and is fed a species-specific formulated compound feed to achieve optimum nutritional value. Every batch of salmon imported by our direct suppliers undergoes rigorous food safety testing and is accompanied by a Fish Health Passport and Sanitary Certificate issued by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

Attributes
Atlantic salmon  (Salmo salar) has a rich, buttery flavour, with medium textured, orange flesh and large flakes. Atlantic salmon is rich in long-chain omega-3, EPA and DHA, which reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Cooking
Atlantic salmon is a versatile product and can be consumed in many forms – raw, grilled, poached and smoked. Pan-fried salmon can be seasoned with salt and pepper, olive oil and butter and fried over high to medium heat, Fried salmon skin is an edible treat.

 

Sustainability

Our Norwegian salmon supplier produces salmon in accordance with strict sustainability and certification standards. All their salmon farms either Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) or Global G.A.P. certified. Both these certification standards are benchmarked and recognised by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI).
